And What a (mostly) Fun Day it Was!

We assembled at 6:46 as commanded ready to do battle with 100 miles of
Lake Superior's North Shore at the 34th Velo Duluth Split Rock Tour!
Some of us were looking pretty darn tired . . .
While others were spry and raring to go!
While some discussed ride strategy over coffee
Still others realized they forgot a their shoes!
(photo not necessarily of offender)
. . . but these are his shoes . . . do you recognize them?
We managed to make exactly 3.8 miles before the
first mechanical of the day
Note the smile on Dave's face . . .
it was HIS bike with the puncture . . . and his wife Erin fixin' it!
Unfortunately, this split the group . . .
and many were not to be seen again until the 1/2 point
I'm not sure why anyone would avoid a ride with views like this!

All was quite (except at the Mocha Moose of course)
until tragedy struck unexpectedly in the form of a crash and bent wheel
James was able to straighten it enough for John to make the 1/2 way point where
Dennis of TWIN PORTS CYCLERY was able to further the repair
It turns out another of our party was involved in a crash when her front wheel
was sucked up by a road snake
the "I'll show you mine if you show me your's" moment
Soon all repairs are made, and some are on their way home
while others chose to stay at Split Rock for coffee
Hey Girls . . . there really, really is a lighthouse here!
This Dave guy is a true gentleman
And led these ladies back down the shore
(nice work if you can get it!)
Shar . . . we said 6:46 downtown, not 1:09 at Gooseberry!
The Sprint to the Mocha Moose!
oops . . . I almost forgot to mention Byron
who explained to us that he never wears his glasses to bed (something about jam)
After a quick coffee at the Mocha Moose, we are ready to roll . .  .

AND THE QUOTE OF THE DAY
"I'll never be able to say I'll never do it again, if I don't do it now!"

  1. I really didn't think my taco tire would make it home. James is the McGiver of bike repair, using a birchwood log to true my wheel? And then Denis got it a bit straighter. At least straight enough to wobble on home, behind the powerful pulls of Russ M., who is just a beast on a bike and never stops whistling just to show that it really doesn't hurt that much. Thanks to everyone for sticking with me and getting me safely home.
The old Trek is off to Twin Ports for a few "updates." Every 25 years or so it's important to have work done on your bike.
